The modern Frenchman is a living illustration to the "Three Musketeers" novel by Alexander Dumas. At least, that is what a Russian mail order brides thinks he is - she was reading old French novels all her childhood, knowing next to nothing about contemporary France. The exaggerated politeness of the buffoon characters played by Louis De Funes, a famous French comedy actor, or the eternal readiness to do anything for the beloved woman of the "grand" Jean-Paul Belmondo characters in the movies scarcely presented by Soviet film distributors only supported the illusions of Russian women.
A Frenchman is always gallant. This is a myth. The remains of gallantry are still there in the higher society where some nobles presser to kiss a woman's hand. However, even the French themselves, when talking about gallantry, invariably add the word "old"...
As a rule, it is an "average" Frenchman who starts a quest for a Russian mail order brides. He could hardly be called gallant. He is usually the first to stretch his hand out to a woman when saying hello - the cost of Republican upbringing. He keeps sitting in the presence of a standing woman, which is very rude by Russian standards. While walking on the pavement, he only leaves her a narrow corridor to pass through - as act of revenge for aggressive feminism and forced ubiquitous equality.

He knows very well that it is not due to traits of his character, it is just a part he plays. But if it is necessary - why not? It is a nice role, sometimes even quite amusing, and most of all, very elevating. It is like in a fairy tale, a kind of inevitable test that the groom has to pass with honors in order to win the hand and heart of the bride.
